In my most recent "Trash Talk" I said that #1 and #2 plastics are always recyclable. Injection molded plastics (clamshells, chicken containers, cake containers, etc.) are, I am sorry to say, not recyclable at our Materials Recycling Facility at this time. Here's the message I got from Justine Fallon at the MRF regarding clamshells: "They are in the no column for now. The Muni and Operator's contract specify that the acceptable items for recycling are containers labeled #1-#7 that are bottles, jars and tubs. The tubs are considered #5 that are margaring tubs, dip tubs, cool whip, etc. Our current market for #1 and #2 plastic is bottles only. They don't want #1 and #2 non-bottle because they are made differently (injection molded) and contaminate the bottles (blow molded) when mixed. Our #3-#7 goes to another MRF (China) that sorts them out into the different containers. Using the numbers to educate is proving challenging because there are so many different types of plastic packages now. In the brochure we tried to get away from the numbers and just use the bottles, tubs and jars." The issue seems to be what kind of market exists for plastic items, and, of course, markets change. In the future, we may be able to recycle more plastics than we do now. The brochure Justine mentioned will be handed out with your trash bags this year. The best approach to recycling plastics for now is to go with what's in the new brochure. As things change I'll let you know.
