Let the Dept of Telecommunications & Cable Know Today in Chester or write a letter Message-ID: <20090803141611.24355.qmail@virt12d.secure-wi.com> DTC Extends Deadline for Regional Investigation of Telephone Service Quality – Last Chance to Submit Comments! Over the years, many residents, local officials and businesses in Western Mass have complained about problems with the quality of their telephone service, such as, static, clicking, humming, and noise during wet weather. If you have had experiences like these, now is the time to have your voice heard. Earlier this year, tremendous support was expressed for the MA Department of Telecommunications & Cable (DTC) to conduct a regional investigation of Verizon’s telephone service quality. As a result, the investigation is now underway, and has recently had its public comment deadline extended to August 14, 2009. As part of the investigation they are collecting testimony about Verizon telephone service quality in western Massachusetts. Statements that describe your personal experience with Verizon telephone service quality are an essential element of this investigation. In particular, statements that are submitted as part of the evidentiary record (which can be done by mail with an affidavit or at the public hearing, if you so choose) are particularly important in determining the outcome of this investigation. If this issue matters to you, it is very important that you attend the public hearing or submit comments by the Friday, August 14, 2009 deadline. The last public hearing will be held on Monday, August 3, 6-9 pm, Town Hall, 15 Middlefield Road, Chester, MA. The address to submit written comments by the August 14th deadline is Catrice C. Williams, Secretary of DTC, Two South Station, 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02110. (If you choose to submit your comments in such a way as to be part of the evidentiary record, please see the public notice for further details.) The raised rubber structures are just east of the Lakeview and Locks Pond Road intersection. Signs have been posted for east and west bound traffic informing and cautioning motorists. These devices are seasonal and will be removed shortly after the Labor Day holiday when pedestrian and bicycle traffic to the lake has decreased significantly. This response is intended to address both the concerns about speed and the "blind corner" at this area of the road. While the posted speed limit remains at 20 mph, an ideal speed to travel over these speed bumps is recomended to be 10mph or less. Please feel free to forward your comments related to this seasonal taffic control system to the Police Department or Select Board. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It follows farmers who rely on natural processes, a grocer striving to provide organic food. Bring the family. Carrot snacks will be provided and an opportunity for discussion will follow the film. This event is brought to you by the Shields family and sponsored by the Agricultural and Forestry Commission. Donations will be accepted Speed Bumps: Please DRIVE SLOWLY around the lake, especially during these beautiful summer days. The new speed bumps with reflectors will be put in next week. We hope everyone will like them. (Whoever took the speed bump sign please return it). Energy: I have been collecting information about the highway barn and it looks like we need to consider an alternative site for our solar project. The highway barn was just reroofed and insulation put up on the inside. The new roof will not work with a non- penetrating clamp system for the solar panel array. We need to consider a site for a ground mounted solar array. We also have almost $20,000 in MRET Clean Energy Choice funds that must be used for an alternative energy project. The 250th Steering Committee is looking for ideas for logos and slogans for our 250th anniversary in 2011. The logos and slogans submitted will be displayed at Celebrate Shutesbury. Please send your ideas to 250th@shutesbury.org , to P.O. Box 264, Shutesbury MA 01072 or by fax to 259-1101 (note 250th Steering Committee). Logos need to be reproducible in black &white. Work will not be returned. Themes are community, nature, history and diversity. Thank you for your interest. Boards and Committees: OPENINGS The Shutesbury Conservation Commission currently has two vacancies. Contact the Commission at 259-3792 or concom@shutesbury.org. Agricultural Committee is still in formation. Please speak with Becky Torres, TA, if you have questions. Farm and Forest By Law attached. Selectboard has started discussion of formation of Shutesbury Water Resources Committee. Zebra Mussel: Town officials are discussing potential invasion of zebra mussels at Lake Wyola. WASH YOUR BOATS, KAYAKS, AND CANOES! Be alert to invasive plants and zebra mussels. Do not move from one water resource area to another without cleaning and drying your boats. A trip to the car wash is recommended. Flyers are available at town hall. If interested in learning more check out this web site :www.mass.gov/dcr/watersupply/lakepond/hot_topic.htm. The highway roof is no longer a good option. The roof will not accommodate the clamping system and the new insulation would have to be removed. The project has to be under contract by November or we loose the $20,000 in MRET Clean Energy Choice funds. Best location, now that the high roof is out, is behind town hall at the edge of the parking lot. Selectboard will notify the public of this project and is planning a meeting in September. We have only preliminary estimates at this time. Library RFQ (Request for Qualification) On Friday 13 architect/design firms came to Shutesbury for a walkthrough of the 2 proposed library sites with our Library officials. LFNAC, the library building committee, will be reviewing the applications at their 9/2 meeting. Water Resources Committee: Selectboard approved committee charge and will begin appointing members. Speed Bumps: Please DRIVE SLOWLY! The speed bumps will be returning soon. Fresh! the Movie About 25 people showed up for the movie on a hot August night in the town hall thermal cooled basement. It was an inspirational movie with footage of suckling baby pigs, healthy chickens living in a chicken hotel (chicken coop on wheels). Michael Pollan (Omnivore’s Dilemma) shared his thoughts about food systems, sustainable agriculture and markets. The evening closed with conversation about things we can do in our community: support our local market, encourage the elementary school to buy locally, farm shares, preserve summer food for winter use, advertise the market, find outlet for garden/food surplus that would be composted if not used. We also discussed limitations to our local food supply: limited number of farmers and farms, short growing season, few green house facilities (some farmers have, some do not), farming is hard work, finding reliable outlets for produce. Thanks to Shields family for making it available in our town hall. Shutesbury Market SATURDAY August 22, 2009 BEHIND TOWN HALL Produce: mushrooms, blueberries, garlic braids and flowers, potatoes, leeks, scallions, flowers, basil, onions, tomatoes, syrup, cilantro, green beans, peas, squash, greens, jalapenos, peppers, garlic, basil, parsley, chives and kale, blueberries, black turtle beans, flowers, tomatoes and PEACHES. (Hope we dodge the heavy rains!) Artwork/Crafts: clothes pin hangers, bonnets, aprons, grandma’s apron, children’s pins, note cards, jewelry-necklaces, earrings, bracelets, tapestry jewelry, mittens, hats, scarves, soaps (Library will return to the market next week, Sat. 8/29/09). DCR Order for Dam Safety Phase 1 Inspection Received a certified letter from DCR Thursday. Morris Root responded immediately to my call and is pursuing ODS to explain why this is necessary on top of Dam Repair Completion Report. We hope that the Phase 1 will not be necessary. Will learn more next week when DCR officials return from vacation. Selectboard Biomass Discussion The Town of Wendell wrote a letter to the Governor asking him to withdraw his support for the Greenfield Biomass facility and cc’d towns in Franklin County. The Shutesbury selectboard discussed the issue Tuesday. They sorted through assumptions looking for facts about biomass energy cycle, tonnage of forest products consumed, state analysis and planning for sustainability levels, foresters’ and residents’ perspectives, and biomass versus impact of wood stove pollution. School Committee Meeting The Selectboard joined the School Committee at the meeting and discussed 2 very important issues, the Amherst initiative to move 6th graders from the elementary school to the middle school and RECONFIGURATION of our district relationships (discussions spurred on by the state's upcoming efforts to consolidate school districts). Supt. Rodriquez, of Amherst, has requested a meeting with the Shutesbury school committee to discuss moving the 6th graders to the middle school. The reconfiguration committee has 3 Shutesbury representatives, Eric Stocker, Michael DeChira and Lori Tuominen (ask them your questions). The Selectboard is also initiating a 5 town meeting with union 28 member towns to discuss their current fiscal situations and thoughts about reconfiguration. The clearest message from last night was that now is a time for us all to pull together.
